What is Nutrigenomics?

If you’ve ever wondered about the effect of nutrition and lifestyle choices on health and general wellbeing, you’re certainly not alone. These days it’s generally accepted that what you eat can affect your weight, your energy levels, even your susceptibility to certain diseases. But what if there was even more at stake in that choice of junk food vs. health food or sedentary couch potato vs. athlete?

Nutrigenomics is a relatively new field that is making some very deep and startling connections between what we’re eating and our genes. The connection and impact of lifestyle and nutrition on not only your own health but your very genetic makeup and that of your children–is a surprising and unsettling proposition to say the least.

As Dr. Claudia Aguirre writes in her HuffPost Healthy Living article, Nutrigenomics: The Diet That Can Change Your DNA: “Poor dietary and exercise lifestyle affects us to our core. So that old saying “you are what you eat” may need a modern update. Perhaps, “You are what your mother ate” is more fitting. The better informed we are about our food choices, the better we can preserve not only our own health, but that of future generations.” Read her article here!
