Thanksgiving Turkey Shortage!

With the end of November fast approaching, many are looking forward to the coming fall and winter holidays. But traditional Thanksgiving staple, turkey, is in short supply this holiday season especially for those relying on local food banks to provide this seasonal favorite. Supply has been diminished due to various factors earlier in the year, including an avian flu outbreak (see NPR’s earlier Avian Flu Outbreak Takes Poultry Producers Into Uncharted Territory).

As MaryAnn Spoto, writing for NJ Advance Media for notes in her article: Turkey shortage, price increase have FoodBank struggling to meet Thanksgiving needs ,“A shortage of turkeys combined with an increase in the number of struggling families this year has the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties struggling to meet its goal to supply local food pantries.” Perhaps inevitably then, this fall, Thanksgiving dinner may taste like chicken for some according to WTNH Reporter, Tina Detelj.
