The Chilliwack Bowls of Hope Society is a dedicated group of volunteers and supporters that provide nutritious lunchtime meals to Chilliwack school children who might otherwise go without. Our successful “Feed the Children Program” has flourished since its inception and now provides over 10,000 bowls of soup per month. Since 2005 the Chilliwack Bowls of Hope Society has operated the“Feed the Children Program” through donations of funds and food, and the efforts of offenders and community-based volunteers of the Chilliwack Community Correctional Centre. Our program currently provides soup and other hot lunch items to 16 schools within the Chilliwack School District. Today, through donations from businesses and the public, 600 children in need receive over 10,000 bowls of soup each month. The “Feed the Children Program” is making a big difference in the Chilliwack community. Increasing the amount of nourishment that a child receives improves their cognitive understanding, especially improving their speed and accuracy of information retrieval in working memory. This results in higher academic achievement and correlates to improvements in behavior which decreases classroom interruptions, thus benefitting all students and teachers.
